THE RECORD

They say "Everything is bigger in Texas" and if Hansel and Gretel have anything to say about it, that would definitely hold true of this edible delight!  Built last December (2013) and located at the Traditions Golf Club in the city of Bryan, Texas, the larger-than-life gingerbread house measured 39,201.8 cubic feet and continues to hold the Guinness World Record. This defeated the record previously held by the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, with its 36,600 cubic foot gingerbread house.

The General Manger of the Traditions Club, Bill Horton, decided to take on the challenge because he felt like it would be a fun way to build a venue that would create excitement and awareness to raise funds for St. Joseph hospital.

THE SHOPPING LIST

It took approximately 7,200 pounds of flour, 7,200 eggs, 3,000 pounds of brown sugar, 1,800 pounds of butter and 22,304 pieces of candy to build the fairytale house, which measured 20.11 feet high, 60 feet wide and 42 feet deep.

THE "HOW"

More than 200 volunteers helped with the project.  The entire exterior was edible, made up of close to four thousand 12x17 inch gingerbread bricks baked by a chef and volunteers.

The gingerbread house required a building permit and was built with traditional techniques, which included a solid foundation, wooden framing and trusses. The interior of the house consisted of two rooms; one for storage and the other decorated with candy canes and a fireplace where visitors met with Santa.

The house requested a donation of $3 for adults and $2 for children, which raised over $150,000 for St. Joseph's.
